Nature and the Environment
ESCI731
Recommended for Gifted Children grades 6 through 9. Our environment is in need of repair, revitalization, renewal. It is in need of keen minds and willing hands, to know it and to save it. This course is about thinking about the act, and doing so with the help of a perhaps unlikely source: Heraclitus, the epigrammatic, Zenmaster Greek. It is meant to give you ideas about how to approach the subject and to ask questions that will help further your thinking about the subject.
Mummies, Eggs and Dinosaurs
ESCI737
Recently, the fossilized body of a dinosaur was uncovered in Montana, complete in every detail down to fossilized skin. It was a scientist’s dream and caused huge excitement in the scientific community. The DVD in this course lets you see first hand the extent of this discovery, down to what the creature had for its last meal. The course also covers the discovery of a clutch of dinosaur eggs and includes a comprehensive tracing of the history of dinosaur development.
Robots and You: Where It's Headed
ESCI725
Forget all you have seen about robots from Hollywood. They are not sinister and about to take over the world. This course looks at the capabilities of robots at present and the best projections of what they will do in the future, according to the best minds in the field: surgery, factory management, all home tasks including windows, and all the mundane tasks we don’t want to do now.
Our Vanishing Wildlife
ESCI734
Species are vanishing almost daily from our planet, and sometimes it seems little is being done about it. Detractors will say 99.9% of all the species that ever lived have gone extinct and it can’t be helped. But can it? Three DVDs document a host of animals with which we are all familiar and are in danger of not surviving. In addition, a text examines what happens to animals when zoos have either a surplus of a species or if the animals become old and decrepit. The result is often cruel and beyond belief.
The Blue Whale: Bigger than the Dinosaurs
ESCI735
The blue whale, the largest animal that ever lived, is in danger of extinction. The 80-foot animal, with a heart weighing 1,000 pounds and the size of a Volkswagen Beetle, now numbers less than 10,000 worldwide. This course examines conservation efforts, the search for the blues’ breeding grounds and its future. A 90-minute DVD examines the animal up close as it makes its annual migration.
The Neanderthal: His Fate and Facts
ESCI733
This course examines in detail Neanderthal man and his place in history. What sort of being was he, the brutish plodder traditionally given, or was his brain, larger than ours, capable of more? And did you know he was often depicted with red hair and freckles? Learn where he came from, the extent of his wanderings, and whether he contributed to today’s gene pool.
The Iraq War: An Insider's Look
EPOL703
Few topics cause more discussion both pro and con than our involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. This course centers directly on people who were there, or were involved in the decision-making and its consequences. Books are by Richard Engel of NBC news, Dexter Filkins of the New York Times and an in depth DVD by leading governmental figures and CIA operatives.
