Hollywood as an Educational Tool

Description

Wouldn’t it be terrific if a history class could take a fieldtrip to watch the Battle of Gettysburg? Or for an astronomy class to walk on the moon? Or for a criminal justice class to sit in the courtroom of the Scopes “Monkey Trial?” Since a time machine has not yet been invented, teachers have traditionally relied on readings, autobiographies and books to study the past. However, through the magic of special effects in movies, it is now possible to witness historic events and feel as if you were actually there. The problem, of course, is just how accurate are those movies and how much of what we see is a product of the director’s imagination? The purpose of this course is for teachers to learn how to evaluate potentially excellent educational movies and determine their historical accuracy. Course requires the use of a DVD player and access to video rentals.

Course Type
