Gifted Children IV - Telling the Truth in Slant

Description

Why is it necessary to tell the truth in slant? To quote Jacob Needleman: “People are asleep. People are deluded. If you tell them really straight out what the situation is….” The ellipsis implies that they do not hear. In this course you will explore some of the means of truthful indirection, learn to read the truth told slant, and to write it. You will be gentled into thinking about applications for such indirection in your own thinking and in the thinking of your students. You will read parables from Franz Kafka and Soren Kierkegaard, epigrams from Heraclitus, haiku from Sodo, Buson and Basho, and poems from James Wright and Ted Kooser.
