Cormac McCarthy, one of our great contemporary novelists, has said that if a writer is not interested in death, he/she is not a serious writer. McCarthy is a very serious writer. In his three novels, Blood Meridian, No Country for Old Men, and The Road, McCarthy takes three penetrating looks into our heart of darkness, revealing death and his human minions in all their civilization-threatening deadliness and variety. His apocalyptic vision is stark, devastating, sometimes oddly beautiful and, in the last two books at least, maybe even hopeful.

Course Type

This is a non-classroom, self-directed, independent study courses, which may include DVDs, CDs, audio/video tapes or other materials and assignments to be returned by mail. Some traditional courses are all home study, others require visits to various locations in the area being studied, and some offer a choice of both. You may earn between one and four semester hours of credit for a Traditional Course, depending on the course you choose.
